2006 Texas Party Platforms Regarding Toll Roads

Democratic

We support:

  • a ban on toll road construction which makes the public pay for roads twice

Green

The process for building toll roads should be changed to allow input from citizens and affected city and county governments. Citizens should be enabled to petition for a referendum on proposed toll roads. Existing highways and roads, or single lanes on existing roads, should not be converted to toll roads without the same citizen and local government input.

Libertarian

Libertarians oppose the Trans Texas Corridor Act, a costly boondoggle intended to benefit land developers through the abuse of eminent domain and the power of highway monopoly. Further, we support legislation that would forbid tolls on any highway right of way which was obtained with tax dollars or through the use of eminent domain or condemnation. Libertarians uphold the right of private enterprise to construct and operate private toll roads, provided that those private toll roads were not established by coercive government power.

Trans-Texas Corridor – Because there are issues of confiscation of private land, State and National sovereignty and other similar concerns, we urge the repeal of the Trans-Texas Corridor legislation.

Tolls on Existing Roads - We oppose tolls charged for traversing previously toll free roadways and disallow continued tolls except for maintenance on existing toll roads already paid for.
